Duncan Carver posted an excellent post about SEO. The best way to consistently get higher rankings in the search engines is to do all the basic stuff. But that takes time.

Every once in a while you’ll come across a magic bullet that will get you there faster. But finding those magic bullets and dealing with them, learning them, implementing them, and then figuring out which ones really work, and which ones don’t… simply isn’t worth your time.

If you have a proper SEO campaign set in place, you should AT LEAST plan to not see improvements from it for three months. Think long term.
